Reproduction and population structure of Primula veris L. (Primulaceae) in semi-natural grasslands – a landscape and management perspective

چکیده

The large number of threatened species, both insects and plants, in the European agricultural landscape, has often been attributed to the abandonment of semi-natural grasslands. Species may also be threatened in the remaining managed grasslands due to a changed and intensified management, compared to the historical use. In this study, effects of grazing management and population characteristics were examined in terms of their importance for the seed production and recruitment of the perennial herb Primula veris L. Four different life-cycle events related to reproduction were studied in 31 and 28 populations, in 2003 and 2004, in an 11 km landscape in Sweden. Population structure was examined in 11 populations in 2004. The losses of propagules in total and at each life-cycle transition were calculated. The results showed that high proportions of propagules were lost due to unsuccessful pollination, grazing, and unsuccessful establishment of seedlings. No single explanatory variable could consequently determine the unsuccessful pollination both years. Grazed areas had higher proportion seedlings compared to other life stages, but not higher density of seedlings compared to ungrazed populations. Ungrazed populations had, compared to grazed areas, equal seedling densities, equal densities of juvenile plants, but higher densities of vegetative plants. Thus, the reduced seedling recruitment per seed in ungrazed grasslands was compensated by a higher production of seeds. Conversely, the loss of seeds in grazed areas was compensated by a higher seedling recruitment per seed. To combine the positive effects of low litter layers and high seed set the results from this study add to the increasing number of studies which indicate that extensive and site specific grazing regimes have to be included in the management of semi-natural grasslands to maintain or enhance the diversity of both rare plants and host plants for rare insect species.

Grazing Regimes and Plant Reproduction in Semi-Natural Grasslands

Wissman, J. 2006. Grazing regimes and plant reproduction in semi–natural grasslands. The dominating grazing regime in semi-natural grasslands today is continuous grazing throughout the season, and a high grazing pressure is often advised in order to avoid litter accumulation. Traditional management, on the other hand, included late mowing and grazing, which favoured plant flowering and seed pro...

Development of EST-SSR markers for Primula ovalifolia (Primulaceae) by transcriptome sequencing1

Premise of the study Microsatellite primers were developed for Primula ovalifolia, a member of Primula section Petiolares (Primulaceae), to study the population genetics and species delimitation in this section. Methods and Results A total of 4753 markers were successfully designated from 5139 putative simple sequence repeat loci. We isolated 38 expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat m...

A method of in vitro clonal propagation of cowslip Primula veris L. (Primulaceae) is reported. This is a species of medicinal importance, protected by law in Poland. MS medium Murashige and Skoog (1962) with 6 benzyladenine BA (4.44 μM) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid 2,4-D (1.13 μM) was found to be optimal for in vitro cowslip propagation from shoot tips under the conditions of culture. Characterization of Novel Microsatellite Loci for Primula poissonii (Primulaceae) Using High-Throughput Sequencing Technology.

Primula poissonii (Primulaceae) is a perennial herb, widely distributed in the Hengduan Mountain region of Southwest China. In this study, Roche 454 pyrosequencing was used to isolate microsatellite markers. A total of 4528 unique sequences were identified from 68,070 unique reads. Of these, eighty-seven microsatellite loci were screened for utility using two criteria: successful PCR amplificat...

Expansion of mass-flowering crops leads to transient pollinator dilution and reduced wild plant pollination

Agricultural land use results in direct biodiversity decline through loss of natural habitat, but may also cause indirect cross-habitat effects on conservation areas. We conducted three landscape-scale field studies on 67 sites to test the hypothesis that mass flowering of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) results in a transient dilution of bees in crop fields, and in increased competition between ...
